The Last Fifteen Days
You will have until Thursday June 16th to complete your assignments. You will be graded separately on each part of the assignment and on contributions you made to any group work or discussion. Submit any work by creating a wiki page on this site and uploading your work
Complete any three of the following assignments (25 points each). Each assignment with the exception of the fetal pig is an individual assignment
Some Suggestions………
1. Surgeon Training
Conduct a dissection of the Fetal Pig following the instructions given. Create a photo presentation or a video of your dissection that shows all the organs discovered during the dissection. For planning purposes this project will take 3-4 days (see calender below)
2. Addiction
Examine the HBO Addiction website. There are a variety of interesting video clips included. How could this website be used in conjunction with the Addiction unit? When and where would you use the resources? What objectives could the website help cover. Write a summary of your investigation.
3. Real Science
Design an experiment using any of the Physiology probes recently acquired. We have UV probes, EKG, heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature probes that can be used to investigate a variety of physiological processes. For example you could use the UV probes to extend the UV lab we did earlier on in the year, or use the HR, BP and skin temperature probes to further investigate the effects of energy drinks.
4.Cancer Either A. Skin Cancer
- Examine the recent study on the risk of tanning beds from the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention reported here .
- Look into the recent FDA Advisory Panel Report
- Research what last year's health care bill means for Indoor tanning.
- Research any promotional material produced by the tanning bed industry.
Do you think there should be some legislation introduced that regulates the use of tanning beds? Produce a position and create a way to illustrate your position OR B. Skin Cancer Clinical Trials:
Visit the Target Cancer series
The three Target Cancer articles chronicle the first human clinical trial of an experimental cancer drug, exploring the challenges that face the doctors and patients who test it. Read the articles and watch the accompanying videos. Write a personal reflection on the articles and meet with me to discuss your thoughts.
5. Possible Side Effects Include…. Find a commercial for a medical drug presently on the market. Research the drug and prepare a short (5 minutes) presentation on the mechanism of its action, the side effects, area of the body it affects, cost etc. Exhibit this in an audio/visual product of your choice
6. You Are What You Eat!
Use the //My Pyramid Tracker// to analyze your diet over a four day period and identify any areas where you need to change. You may want to start with the TUTORIAL. Make sure you save your work each day. (Is there a better mobile device app than can be used?)
Complete the activities on the web page and prepare a 300 word critique of your diet.
You may complete this as a double project by completing the My Pyramid Plan and My Pyramid Menu Planner and either comparing a normal weekend to a prom weekend diet, or producing a healthy weeks diet plan
7. Changing the Eating Habits of a Nation
Read
a. Philadelphia School Battles Students’ Bad Eating Habits, on Campus and Off and watch the accompanying video.
b.ASCD Lunch Lessons.doc
Explain your reaction to these articles in a video, podcast, or multimedia form. Do you think the strategies in the articles will work to change the eating habits of American children? What shocked you about the articles, what did you agree with, disagree with? What would/could you do locally or nationally to help solve this problem?
8. Health Pamphlet
Prepare an info. sheet/pamphlet on recent health concerns, remedies, nutritional info., new procedures etc. that could be handed out to the teaching staff.
9. ‘Wiki, wiki, wiki
Design a wiki page for the Stem cell or Breast Cancer units we studied this year or for a physiological subject of your choice. Try to link to web sites with interesting content, interactive animations, diagrams etc. (This could be a double grade depending on the detail and length). There is also a wikibook on Human Physiology at //http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Human_Physiology// that could be edited or you could start a new page on wikipedia. Let me know
10. Bookmark Baby
Create an account on one of the social bookmarking sites. Use the user name NPfirstname11. Use the site to create a list of relevant bookmarks for a unit(s) we have studied this year and that could be used by next year’s class. The bookmarks should include articles, blogs and video links. 11. Stem Cells
Research
a. the latest court ruling about stem cell funding and
b. recent problems with iPS research.
c. the recent human clinical trials using esc
Where do you think stem cell research will be in 15 years? Explain your opinion to in a video, podcast, or multimedia form.
12. Conjoined Twins
Read the article on Tatiana and Krista Hogan, twins joined by common cranial bones. Watch the accompanying video and other videos from a google search. Research other types of conjoined twins and prepare a presentation on some of the physiological problems associated with the different types.
For the more technically gifted.... 13. Google Search Engine
Use the //Google Search Engine link// to help you create a customized NP Google Search Engine for a unit we have covered this year. Demonstrate how the search engine could be used to answer questions from the unit in question
14. Web 2.0
There are so many Web 2.0 applications (tools that allow students to collaborate and share ideas, add or create content) that can be used in the instructional process. Research at least three of these and show how they could be used in the teaching of physiology.
15. You want to do what?
THIS IS IMPORTANT!!! Is there anything you want to study, present, design etc. in the following weeks that can be linked to physiological research or any section of the course? I welcome your ideas and thoughts.
Mobile Devices - For the next three weeks I would like your feedback on how best to use mobile devices/Smart Phones/tablets etc. to enhance instruction, student engagement and students learning. How might they be used best in next years class? Let me know any ways in which you might use a mobile device during the assignments to help with your engagement and learning. If it sounds appropriate I will let you try it out but you must have my permission beforehand. Extra Credit (5 points) will be awarded for your approved use and demonstration of a mobile device.
Please be aware that the school guidelines for acceptable use of technology are still in effect.
In addition in the last week of the course you will be asked to complete an evaluation of the course using the link below. You will be awarded a grade on completion (10) Course Assessment: Please answer these questions as accurately and freely as you feel necessary. I will use the information to adapt next years curriculum to students needs. I am looking for recognition of what worked for you in the classroom, constructive criticism and suggestions for the future. Your grade will not depend on the positive or negative nature of your comments but on the depth of your explanation. As always I appreciate your input and thanks for all your hard work this year.
